20: Bake a cake

Where there is cake, there is hope. And there is always cake.

Cooking was one thing in particular that I wanted to explore with these Challenges. My Mum is a fantastic cook, often experimenting with different recipes and flavours but always creating something delicious. Up until now the extent of my cooking abilities were to scramble eggs in the morning, and BBQ hotdogs at night.

"I wanted to learn how to bake something delicious. A chocolate cake!"

My girlfriend and I are big Masterchef fans. I still complain that Julie won in season 1 and she still talks about how Sashi was her favourite from the beginning. We decided to turn this Challenge into a full-blown afternoon of cooking, accompanying a sweet honey gnocchi dish with the chocolate cake.

Baking and cooking were fun, especially with my girlfriend. Even though the gnocchi was slightly doughy and the cake a little too dry, it was a great first effort from two newbies. My cooking ability is definitely something that I want to expand upon and I hope that this challenge serves as the first step towards culinary mastery!

Kidding – I’ll just be happy not to burn my finger on the stove next time…
